Donna Mercado Kim

Donna Mercado Kim is a Democratic politician.
Elected to the Senate in 2000, she has chaired the Committee on Tourism, the Committee on Ways and Means, the Special Committee on Accountability, and the Task Force on Reinventing Government. From 2003-2008 and 2011-2013, Kim was the Vice President of the Senate. From 2013-2015, she served as President of the Hawaiʻi Senate, before being ousted in an unsual mid-year leadership reorganization. She replaced Shan Tsutsui who left the position to become Lieutenant Governor. As President, she earned $53,773 annually. She was involved in a minor controversy when she was accused of pressuring the President of the University of Hawaiʻi to accept her son's application to the William S. Richardson School of Law.
From 1986-2000, Kim served on the Honolulu City Council. From 1982-1984, Kim was a member of the Hawaiʻi House of Representatives. She is a graduate of Washington State University, although she also attended the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. She is a Filipino American.
